A Glimpse into the Life of Qingbao, the Panda Ambassador in the USA

Qingbao, whose name means "Green Treasure" in Chinese, was born on September 12, 2021, at the Wolong Shenshuping Base of the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda. She is the younger twin sister of Qingzi and the daughter of Jiamei. Qingbao's name was chosen on March 3, 2022, to coincide with World Wildlife Day, as part of a naming contest that aimed to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. Her name carries the message of preserving our natural environment, echoing the call for harmony between humans and nature.

In October 2024, Qingbao, along with her male companion Baoli, embarked on an exciting new chapter in their lives. They left their home at the Dujiangyan Base of the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda, heading to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. From there, they boarded a special flight destined for Washington Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. Their arrival marked the resumption of the panda diplomacy between China and the United States, a tradition that has fostered friendship and cooperation between the two countries for decades.The Washington National Zoo News Service announced that "Qingbao" will make its first public appearance on January 24, 2025

Upon their arrival, Qingbao and Baoli were warmly welcomed and transported to the Washington National Zoo, where they will spend the next ten years. Chinese experts have visited multiple times to assess the living conditions, feeding management, food supply, and health care arrangements. The zoo has upgraded its panda enclosure, ensuring a steady supply of bamboo and bamboo shoots, and has assembled a professional team to care for the pandas.
