The Story of Panda Meilan
Share
Panda Meilan (Lannie), male (once mistaken for female), pedigree number: 649, was born on September 6, 2006 at the Atlanta Zoo in the United States. Her father is panda Yangyang and her mother is panda Lunlun. Meilan is the first child of pandas Lunlun and Yangyang who live in the United States. At birth, Meilan was mistaken for a female because her gender was difficult to identify and her personality was gentle. It was not until she returned to China to participate in the breeding program that she was discovered to be a male. When Meilan was 100 days old, the Atlanta Zoo named her "Meilan" through a public online vote, which means "the beauty of Atlanta". On February 5, 2010, Meilan and another panda Taishan who lived in the United States took a special plane back to China and arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. After returning to China, Meilan started a new life at the Chengdu Research Base of Panda Breeding and gradually adapted to the domestic environment. After returning to China, Meilan actively participated in the breeding program and successfully gave birth to several offspring. According to incomplete statistics, Meilan has 23 children, including Menglan, Mengbao, Mengyu, Hehua, Heye, etc. These panda babies have inherited the good genes of their parents and have become the new generation of stars in the panda world. Meilan was once the global promotion ambassador of the "Earth Hour" event. During the lights-out ceremony, she "pulled" the rope down to turn off the lights with her mouth, conveying the concept of environmental protection.
