The story of the panda Gaogao
Share
Gao Gao, a male giant panda with a pedigree number of 415, is presumed to have been born around 1991. In April 1993, this young giant panda was discovered in the wild at Fengtongzhai Nature Reserve in Baoxing, Sichuan Province. At that time, he was separated from his mother, covered in wounds, and had even lost half of his ear, in a poor physical condition. Thanks to the meticulous treatment of scientific researchers, Gao Gao survived and was sent to live at the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center. On January 15, 2003, as part of the "12-Year Giant Panda Breeding Program" between China and the United States, Gao Gao embarked on a journey to the San Diego Zoo in the United States, where he lived with a female giant panda named Baiyun and successfully bred five offspring, including sons Yunzi, Xiaoliwu, and Sulin, as well as daughters Zhenzhen. Xing'an is Gao Gao's grandson. On November 1, 2018, Gao Gao, who was already 28 years old (equivalent to about 98 years old in human years), ended his residency at the San Diego Zoo and returned to the China Research Center for Giant Panda Conservation, where he enjoys his twilight years at the Dujiangyan Qingchengshan Base. Gao Gao has also become the protagonist of the documentary "Returning Home," which documents the heartwarming stories between the management staff and Gao Gao through a large number of vivid lenses.
